Analysis of a slow–fast system near a cusp singularity

2016

This paper studies a slow fast system whose principal characteristic is that the slow manifold is given by the critical set of the cusp catastrophe. Our analysis consists of two main parts: first, we recall a formal normal form suitable for systems as the one studied here; afterwards, taking advantage of this normal form, we investigate the transition near the cusp singularity by means of the blow up technique. Our contribution relies heavily in the usage of normal form theory, allowing us to refine previous results. (C) 2015 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Wave Propagation in a 3-D Optical Waveguide

2003

In this paper we study the problem of wave propagation in a 3-D optical fiber. The goal is to obtain a solution for the time-harmonic field caused by a source in a cylindrically symmetric waveguide. The geometry of the problem, corresponding to an open waveguide, makes the problem challenging. To solve it, we construct a transform theory which is a nontrivial generalization of a method for solving a 2-D version of this problem given by Magnanini and Santosa.\cite{MS} The extension to 3-D is made complicated by the fact that the resulting eigenvalue problem defining the transform kernel is singular both at the origin and at infinity. The singularities require the investigation of the behavio…

Some spectral mapping theorems through local spectral theory

2004

The spectral mapping theorems for Browder spectrum and for semi-Browder spectra have been proved by several authors [14], [29] and [33], by using different methods. We shall employ a local spectral argument to establish these spectral mapping theorems, as well as, the spectral mapping theorem relative to some other classical spectra. We also prove that ifT orT* has the single-valued extension property some of the more important spectra originating from Fredholm theory coincide. This result is extended, always in the caseT orT* has the single valued extension property, tof(T), wheref is an analytic function defined on an open disc containing the spectrum ofT. In the last part we improve a re…

Texture analysis with statistical methods for wheat ear extraction

2007

In agronomic domain, the simplification of crop counting, necessary for yield prediction and agronomic studies, is an important project for technical institutes such as Arvalis. Although the main objective of our global project is to conceive a mobile robot for natural image acquisition directly in a field, Arvalis has proposed us first to detect by image processing the number of wheat ears in images before to count them, which will allow to obtain the first component of the yield. In this paper we compare different texture image segmentation techniques based on feature extraction by first and higher order statistical methods which have been applied on our images. The extracted features are…

The line model of form and emotion : perspectives on western design

2018

This paper introduces a new model of form, emotion, and semantics through a process of form abstraction utilizing lines. Understanding the emotional and semantic value of form is a complex task, and many theories have been developed. Analyzing the visual arts through line relationships and interactions is a conceptually novel approach and offers new avenues for advancing studies in form theory, theories of emotion and perception, and design generally. By examining literature in visual perception, form theory, and emotion, and by historically analyzing changes in form through the aesthetic arts and then reducing these aesthetic elements into basic linear foundations, we developed the line mo…
